Join the Conversation: What Stops You From Clearing Your Clutter?

Elizabeth Jones, world renowned Astrologer on a recent teleseminar shared, “In 2012 more than ever there is a strong focus to get your house in order. Simplify, de-clutter, and organize your home and health to bring yourself into alignment with the Universal Energies.”

Our external environment is a reflection of our internal environment.  Our homes are telling a story of whom we are inside.  Sometimes we forget that everything has an energy including the “stuff” that surrounds us.  I invite you to look around your environment and ask yourself – Does this represent who I truly am?  Some times the best place to start clearing our physical and emotional baggage is right in our own homes and offices.  One of the biggest culprits of feeling stuck in our lives or experiencing stagnant energy is Clutter.  Energy needs space to move!  Clutter is ultimately an energy block that impacts our health, relationships, careers, and prosperity.

Have you ever walked into a person’s home and immediately felt comfortable or at ease?  Or maybe the opposite, you felt like you could not get out of there fast enough?   You are feeling the energy of the space.  Take a moment and slowly walk through your home or office.  Begin at the front door and gradually move from room to room with new eyes.  Notice how you feel physically and emotionally as you enter each room.  What do you see, feel or smell?  Does it look warm and inviting?  Does it feel chaotic and cluttered?  Does it look clean and organized?  Do you feel overwhelmed and stressed?  Is this a room you would “like” to sit in, relax in, eat in, work in, or sleep in?  The good news is that you don’t need to be a Feng Shui expert to clear your clutter.

Before we can start clearing out the clutter, it is important to understand why we hold on to more things than we have to.  Otherwise, we will de-clutter only to re-clutter again.  Clearing and Manifesting Energies and Advanced Clearing and Manifesting Energies are both techniques to help you with this – there are many including a good Therapist.  Here are some of our emotional contributors to clutter:?denial, overwhelm, fear of letting go, guilt, anger, embarrassment.

What Stops us from de-cluttering our lives?

1.  Denial — We do not recognize it as a problem.  We have allowed ourselves to believe clutter is not affecting our lives.  Sometime we keep it hidden  (closets, garages, spare bedrooms, storage spaces) and out of “sight” as a way of not dealing with it.

2.  Overwhelm — When we don’t know where to begin, we can get lost in overwhelm.  Maybe the task seems so huge we don’t think we can manage it.  The state of overwhelm sucks our energy leaving us feeling exhausted at the idea of starting to deal with the clutter.  And of course, overwhelm is easily confused with “I don’t have time.”  This confusion leads to difficulty in knowing what to let go of and what to keep to bring balance to our body and our surroundings.

3.  Fear of Letting Go — Letting go of an item can be symbolic of not wanting to let go of the past.  Our stuff can have an emotional charge that is like an umbilical cord that needs to be cut so we can grow.  We may have boxes of items that we have not used or looked at in a decade, but just can’t throw them out.  We have all heard or maybe said:  “I am afraid I may need it some day” or “It could be worth something” or “It has sentimental value.”  Letting go of “stuff” makes more room for energy to move.

4.  Guilt – How many of you have purchased exercise equipment only to have it collect cobwebs?  Or feel guilty that you spent so much money for something that no longer serves you.  The problem is we feel guilty that we purchased it 10 years ago and never used it so we don’t want to let it go.  Also, guilt has a big hold on us, as we equate our clutter with feelings of unworthiness for not fulfilling our roles as good parents, children, partners, etc.

5. Anger – Are you living in a space where the clutter belongs to someone else and every time you see it you feel frustrated and angry?   Or maybe it is you that’s the clutter bug and it is a source of anger for your partner or spouse.  This energy can drain loving energy from your relationship.  We can get stuck in anger and blame and use it as an excuse for not taking action.

6. Embarrassment - Are you afraid of letting people into your home because you are embarrassed by the clutter and mess?   Maybe the laundry is always piled up, the toys are everywhere, the kitchen has dirty dishes stacked up and your desk looks like a tornado passed through.  Sometimes we’re just too embarrassed to ask for help.

I have a big issue with clutter, I have been decluttering my house for 5 years now, and everytime I want to get rid of something, my husband argues with me over it. I am definitely #5 and #6 in your article. I clean a room and it gets cluttered again. I ask for help and I get yelled at. junk mail is another big deal, I ask that these things be thrown away, but I always hear I might need it later. I have shoe boxes of “I might need it later” in a corner, some as old as 2 years. I set up a center for mail but it does not get used. I get very upset over this. I cry alot over this. I feel I cant do the things I enjoy because I am constantly cleaning clutter. and when I clean it, I feel wonderful, and the energy is amazing!! Since I have been with my hubby, I just have clutter. he grew up in clutter. I did too, but not to his extent. we always got rid of things that we didnt need anymore. I love hime dearly, but am at my wits end! thanks for the vent!!…..LOL

    Hi,

Another thing that stops me from de-cluttering is difficulty making decisions. The idea of having to decide what should be tossed or what I should keep is overwhelming to me. After I decide what to hang onto, then I have to decide where to put it etc.

Another impediment is that I have children who have learned from me how to be disorganized. How can I request from them to organize their things when I am so disorganized myself? So it’s not just my clutter I have to contend with but everyone else’s too.

    • Pauline says:

      Hi Sherry:
You are absolutely correct, you cannot expect your kids to be organized when you are not. It’s easy for all of us to focus on the problem rather than the solution especially when it has be an energetic habit for a long time. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t do. Take some action steps to help you energetically out of the “overwhelm mode,” For example, go get three bins, label one trash, one donation, one storage and start moving items into the bins…small steps can decrease the overwhelm. Also, from an energy medicine perspective, difficulty making decisions is related to small intestine and the fire element. Overwhelm can be related to imbalances in triple warmer. The theme of difficulty letting go is generally related to metal and large intestine imbalances. The good news is that these are energetic imbalances that can be remedied. You may want consider an Energy Medicine Skype Consultation with Melanie to work on these imbalances. I have already started decluttering…I got “on a roll” when I took the Christmas tree down…it feels SO GOOD to open the space for things to flow better! I had way too much “stuff” in my house from Christmas (tree in my kitchen, decorations, etc). We have my daughter and 3 grandchildren living with with us in a 1300 sq ft house…I have been organizing and decluttering for the past 6 months since they have been living here just so our home does not become a huge CLOSET! Now there are 3 little girls Christmas toys to add to the process of organizing. I love containers…If I can’t get rid of it, I put it in something..at least for now.
